Sound familiar? In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker also loses his arm to his antagonistic father, after rejecting his offer to join the Dark Side. Finn’s father, on the other hand, abandons him the moment they meet, which sparks a significant physical transformation in Finn - he loses his arm. But her love is so great that it proves to be highly oppressive. Especially Finn, whose voice actor quite literally grows up behind-the-scenes, beginning the series as a tween and ending as a young man.įinn’s mom is shown to be a loving parent, when she is finally introduced. Essentially, those bad dads forced our protagonists to grow up.Īnd Adventure Time, if it was about any one subject, it would be about the confusing and complex process of growing up. The oppressive and absent father figures in Adventure Time might have been terrible role models, but the confrontation they provided usually pushed the characters into a corner, sparking change and self-improvement. As varied as Adventure Time’s adventures became, the malevolent dad always returned.
But then again, the adversarial father is a common theme, a trope as old as stories themselves, and one that Adventure Time fixated on, again and again.
